Normally I’d use my 70-200mm F2.8 lens for this kind of thing as I’d usually want the range and speed, but as this was a casual training session and I could stand wherever I liked, I decided I wanted to try something a bit different including some composite action shots and close range low angles, so went with my wide angle 12-24mm lens instead. Had expected to switch to the 70-200mm as well but it was raining on and off all day so I didn’t want to be swapping lenses in the rain, and also I was getting such good results with my wide angle that I decided it would be a shame not to carry on with it, even if it did involve getting a little close for comfort at times. Proved the point that wide angle lenses aren’t just for landscapes and architecture!

When Adobe announced Lightroom 4 my initial interest was largely diminished when I read the list of new features and didn’t see anything that struck me as being useful to the way I process images. The price drop was certainly a nice surprise and I expect may finally convince a few people who were interested before but weren’t prepared to spend out £200 to finally make a purchase, but most of the new features seemed to revolve around video file support and new output options which just weren’t any use to me. However when I read more in to the new highlight and shadow tools I was intrigued and downloaded the trial version. Suffice to say I was convinced in short order and purchased my upgrade edition the same day. The new tools replace previous recovery and fill light tools and perform roughly the same function, but with dramatically improved results, to the point that I can now practically replicate a multiple photo exposure effect using a single shot in under a minute as long as the starting exposure is reasonably balanced and there’s still some detail to recover. See my software tech tips page for a detailed example

Well, except for possibly getting one of F-stop’s smaller packs for more casual use some day…

I have written quite a lot for the review as I’ve gone into a fair bit of detail, but if you don’t fancy reading a small essay then I’ve also included loads of photos to illustrate my points which should largely speak for themselves.

The review is under the ‘Mixed’ category of my camera bags reviews page as it does more than just carry camera gear, but I also have it listed as a featured review as it really is that good that I feel it warrants highlighting

I went to Focus on Imaging for the first time this year, certainly a very interesting event and one that proved very useful for me, if damaging to my bank balance… It is most definitely a show more heavily geared to studio photographers, with an abundance of lighting and printing manufacturers in attendance, and relatively little geared towards outdoor photographers, however there is a bit of something for everyone, not least a number of major manufacturers with all their main products on display, so it’s a great opportunity if you’re on the fence about buying something to check it out first hand. And to really make the day worthwhile, there was even a talk with accompanying images by Andy Rouse, by far one of the most inspirational and entertaining names in the world of wildlife photography in my opinion!

Of course Nikon and Canon both had huge areas to show off all their major cameras and lenses, then the likes of Manfrotto and Gitzo had tripods in abundance and Lowepro, Kata, Tamrac etc. had their various ranges of bags on show, all very useful to anyone actively in the market for a new bit of kit, or just to conduct research as to what size camera bag might suit your needs in the future, equally though it’s not the kind of show to go to if you’re not that interested in the ‘gear’ side of photography and don’t want to check out whatever is next on your wish list

For me there were a number of things that were interesting to check out for future reference, as well as sheer curiosity on a few items on the ‘in my dreams!’ list (the Nikon 200-400mm lens for example that will be out of my price range for the forseeable future!), but one of the things I was most interested in was the range of bags by an American company called f-stop that are now being stocked in limited number in the UK by Paramo. I first saw f-stop bags last year via a refrence to their site, and have long been of the opinion that they looked like the best designed backpacks for outdoor photographers I’d ever seen, however the rather steep cost of them, coupled with supply and demand issues, meant there was no way I’d ever convince myself to buy one unless I could see it first and verify whether they really lived up to expectations. Well, sure enough at the Paramo stand, there they were, the full range on offer, in short supply, (not least due to strong recommendation by the aforementioned Mr Rouse, who’s opinion is generally highly respected), and after close inspection and deliberation I bit the bullet and picked up one of their Satori EXP bags. I shall be spending some time now experimenting with the camera compartment and will write up a full review soon, suffice to say though, geeky as it is, I’m really rather excited about this purchase and expect it to be the last camera bag I ever buy!

On the one hand a wide array of galleries shows a broad range of subjects and areas of interest, however the one big problem is that it really doesn’t highlight the best of my work.

Therefore over the last week or so I’ve been slowly putting together a portfolio page with a few of my best/favourite shots with a little bit of background and technical information about each shot. Currently I only have a few British Wildlife photos in the portfolio but will be adding more content from my other galleries in the coming weeks, however the current top image is also one of my favourite shots at present, taken a couple of weeks ago at an RSPB reserve

While we had half hoped we might find some likely wildlife rich spots and had gone equipped accordingly, we soon resigned ourselves to the fact that the open nature of Dartmoor wasn’t going to lend itself to any reliable wildlife watching in the space of one weekend so we focussed on landscapes and long exposures of water instead. While we struggled to find good spots with foreground interest for landscapes, we still managed to find a few good spots and put our respective recently acquired wide angle lenses and filter kits to the test. My best efforts from the trip can be found in the Landscapes, Sunsets and new Water galleries respectively

Another fairly major gallery page overhaul is almost complete. I can’t quite remember what first got me onto this all of a sudden, but I recently started playing about with bits of slideshow creation software. The slideshows I have used for some time now have always been perfectly adequate, but I always felt were there because they ought to be there, not because they really added much besides removing the necessity to click the next button to scroll through photos, something I decided it was time to do something about

After quite a lot of testing with 2 particular products I finally chose which one I was going to subscribe to and began the long process of generating new slideshows for all my galleries, previously I just had to input a bit of code with a link to the corresponding Flickr galleries but these new fancy slideshows are all seperately created. Additionally, having gone to the expense and time of creating all these new slideshows, I decided I didn’t want them to just sit on an optional sub-page of the galleries, but wanted them to be the first thing visitors see as I think they are much more eyecatching than the main thumbnail layout, so I have done away with seperate gallery and slideshow pages and rolled the 2 together

So far I’m pleased with the results but as always welcome feedback, all galleries should be up and running in the new format apart from the Africa galleries, as I am still procrastinating about tidying up my workflow of them so I can actually get organised!

Here’s an example of the new slideshows, most of them use licensed music I chose from a library included with the software that generates them, but this one I was quite pleased with as it’s a recording of a track from the ‘Shamu Rocks’ show at Seaworld that has never been released commercially, so as far as I’m aware means I can use it without breaching any copyrights, and I just really wanted to use it as it’s so appropriate and is just plain brilliant

Having owned one of the Lowepro Flipside range of backpacks for a while I really came to love the rear opening design and lament the flaws of my traditionally front opening Nature Trekker, so came to be in the market for a new bag, which ended up being the Kata Beetle-282 PL. It really is a great bag for many reasons which I have gone through in great detail (arguably over the top detail but hey, once I started I couldn’t stop), head over to the Camera Bags reviews page to see why I rate it
